Diary of a SA Student

Diary of a law student in 1994 (Yes the date is significant)

Dear Diary: Woke up with a hangover again, drinking with a tight budget means cheap booze and mammoth headaches! Early mornings are also a killer but had to get my backside to the Social Dimensions of Justice class that started at 8. Got through the day eventually and the bonus was spending more time with Doris, she is so cool! I think she could be the one! I am definitely going to work harder in class so we graduate together and when my student loan is paid off I will be buying an engagement ring to fit her finger, mark my words! Met a new bunch of students at the local after class – they personify inspiration. They told me about their challenges and battles to just get through school and how their parents have spent ALL their life savings putting them through varsity. It’s both sad and humbling and yet it speaks volumes of their character and passion for a better future. I can actually imagine them debating and arguing cases in a court of law and even using their acquired knowledge and determination to bring about constructive change in this country. I can also imagine a law firm with my partner Doris though haha Good night!

Diary of a law student 2016 (Yes that would be 22 years after the promises of 1994)

Dear Diary: Woke up with a hangover again, drinking too much of that good quality stuff we looted from the shop means sore head. I was relieved to find that I hadn’t lost my iPhone at the party although with all the money I am saving by stealing booze other stuff I already have enough for a new one! Should have been going to class at 8 but slept some more so the others started the party without me. I pulled in later and it was such a jol! We were dancing and singing too much and I think I hurt my arm throwing all those half bricks at the security guards. (We broke the wall to the library for more ammo) Speaking of which I bumped into a mate from school, he is a cop now and he said they just doing their job protecting our university and he is working to put his kids through school but he doesn’t understand my needs so I told him to voetsek. Anyway we turned a cop van on its roof and burned a bus which was cool to watch. Those students that can barely afford bus fare to get to class must rather walk! Haha! My hangover started catching up with me so I told the guys we needed to go find some booze. En Route we went past the ladies res and broke down doors, found some girls studying and scared the life out of them, seeing the fear in their eyes was epic! On the way home we got some trendy clothes from the shop we broke into and then had a lekker braai and finished the booze from yesterday. Must stock up again tomorrow, eish this student life is awesome! I am lying in bed imagining a future with lots of money, an honorary degree and a ministerial position, life is great. Good Night!
