Cyril’s Mask Incident

I always laugh when my closest friends and loved ones are clumsy or do something to be poked fun at. I do so because it creates a moment to lift the spirits, but more importantly, it creates a moment of commonality, it connects us and it strengthens us. I am more than happy to be on the receiving end of this too, as history will show. If you laughed at Mr Ramaphosa’s mask issue, after him having another one of a countless ‘Groundhog Day’s’ in addressing us, because you feel for him and because you, like most committed South Africans, respect the man, embrace him and can laugh WITH him, then we are cut from the same rainbow cloth. It’s a funny moment and provides some welcome relief amidst the unprecedented tension and events that are unfolding. If, however, you disregard his dedication to our Nation and poke fun at him to the point where it undermines his efforts, then the joke is on you. He is one of us and its his fallibility which makes him easier for everyone to relate to. He is also our leader and one of the best we have ever had. Treat him like the leader of our country and the man who carries the burden of our wellbeing on his shoulders should be treated. Treat him with respect, not because you have to, but because he has earned it and he deserves it. Laugh with him and we will all laugh together, laugh at him and you will laugh on your own. At the end of the day, from the top down or the bottom up, we are all in this together. And thats all I have to say about that. #proudlysouthafrican #goodjobcyril #youhavemysupportmrramaphosa
